Tells the story of how a team of deported Jews - led by the author - saved thousands from death during the Holocaust. The Romanian Holocaust began in 1941, when deported Jews were expected to perish. Thousands were sent to the German-occupied Soviet territory of Moghilev in the Ukraine. With Moghilev in ruins and no food or shelter for the surviving deportees, Jagendorf persuaded the Romanian Prefect to allow him to recruit a task force to repair the city's non-functioning electrical system and to restore the iron works. Electricity was restored, and Jagendorf's work crews soon grew to hundreds and then thousands. In this memoir, Jagendorf chronicles the daily struggle of 15,000 starving deportees and how they were eventually saved. Aron Hirt-Manheimer is the winner of the Anne Frank Medal.
