There is a universally perceived need for an up-to-date introductory text on Islam that is accessible to undergraduate students. Esposito's intention is to present Islam as the living, viable, alternative world view that it has been, and continues to be, for a large segment of the world's population. Incorporating the "insider's" as well as the "outsider's" viewpoint, the book will not simply describe Muslim beliefs, practices, attitudes, and values, but will bring them alive for the reader through quotations from original sources such as the Qu'ran and traditions of Muhammad. It will provide a balance between doctrine and practice, the role of the Prophet and the importance of scripture, and historical foundations and the current trends of reform and revival.
