This is the second of two collections of articles by the late Mario Esposito to be published by Variorum. The previous volume, Latin Learning in Medieval Ireland, focused upon the literary activity of the Irish in Ireland itself; the present one concentrates upon the spread of Irish learning to the Continent and the works produced there. Both volumes are based on an unparalleled knowledge of the manuscripts and, taken together, they constitute the essential prolegomenon for an eventual history of Hiberno-Latin literature. The articles in this collection deal above all with the 9th century, when many Irish monks left their native land - whether on pilgrimage, to avoid Viking attack, or simply to seek better libraries - and sought employment in Europe. These Irish peregrini or exiles included some of the most brilliant scholars of their day, men who left their impression on every aspect of Latin learning, from astronomy to grammar, and it is largely thanks to Esposito that their careers are understood today. - - Ceci est le seconde du regrettÚ Mario Esposito que publient les Úditions Variorum.
