Publisher's Synopsis

"Disabled people should be shown as an ordinary part of life in all forms or representation".;This was the conclusion reached at the Invisible Children conference, organized by Integration Alliance and Save the Children. It was attended by more than 150 key image makers, including TV and film directors, producers, scriptwriters, editors, actors, authors and illustrators who came together with leading members of the Disabled People's Movement.;This report looks at the arguments made for change in the way disabled people are portrayed. Presentations include the historical portrayal of disability, an analysis of how disability has been presented in children's literature, an account of a parent's view with practical ways forward, and a critique of moving images from TV, film and theatre. A summary is provided of the plenary discussion in which various speakers gave examples of the effects of exclusion, stereotyped images and changes they feel ought to take place. A practical list of ideas is included as the way forward, along with contact names, addresses, and examples of positive representation suggested by members of the Integration Alliance.
