Excerpt from Intermediate (Quartz Monzonitic) Character of the Central and Southern Appalachian Granites: With a Comparative Study of the Granites of New England and the Western United States
Feldspar, quartz, and biotite, in the order named, are the dominant minerals in these rocks throughout the region. The total feldspar varies greatly in amount, but ranges between per cent. (maryland) and per cent. (georgia), with an average for the entire region Of per cent. Of the total rock mass. Averaged for the individual states, a nearly progressive increase in feldspar from north to south (maryland, 5453 per cent.; Virginia, per cent; North Carolina, per cent; South Carolina, 6684 per cent; and Georgia, per cent.) is indicated, the northernmost state, Maryland, showing the minimum, and the southernmost state, Georgia, the maximum amount.
