Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Inter-America, Vol. 4: English; April, 1921

The words of a person that we know acquire for us a meaning that they would not have in the mouth of another that is an entire stranger to us; and they would have even less, if we heard them from a phonograph. Every word, however uh substantial it may be, has, at the moment of utterance, its particular life or char acter, according as the look, the voice, the tone with which it is uttered be re garded.

What will be done then by the novelist that desires to transcribe it with absolute exactitude? It will not be enough to repeat it like a graphophone or to write it as a typist does; and in this consists the difference between a machine and an artist. The machine will give us merely the word; the artist, its inner meaning; and he will accomplish the miracle of making the reader see the look that accompanies it, bear the timbre of the voice.
