Publisher's Synopsis
Selected Proceedings of the 9th International Conference on Instrumentation, Control & Automation in Water & Wastewater Treatment & Transport Systems; 29 May - 2 June 2005, Busan, Korea The ICA Specialist Group of IWA (and its predecessor organizations) has been holding this conference every four years since 1969 with the aim of providing a forum to exchange information and experience internationally on all aspects of sensor technology, instrumentation, control and automation for water and wastewater treatment and transport systems. In most of these fields conventional sensors are well accepted now, and anaerobic processes and freshwater monitoring are new focuses of attention for ICA applications. Conventional control technologies for aeration, nitrification and denitrification are now considered mature applications; however non-linearity and complexity of processes have be overcome by advanced control technology. Diagnosis was required as part of overall control strategy. Plant-wide control within a unit plant should be considered seriously combining treatment process with sewer and receiving water. Regional-based integrated management of several plants showed better operation and cost reduction. After full peer review 59 papers have been selected from the programme of this very large conference. They are published here under the following categories: sensors and control in anaerobic processes; control in nutrient removal; SBR control; plant-wide control and management; fuzzy control and information systems; expert systems; detection and early warning; monitoring in water and wastewater treatment; software sensors; monitoring and control of water distribution network; monitoring systems.
