Publisher's Synopsis

This proceedings, ""Innovative Design and Construction for Foundations and Substructures Subject to Freezing and Frost"", consists of papers presented at a session sponsored by The Geo-Institute of the ASCE in conjunction with the National Convention held in Minneapolis, Minnesota, October 5-8, 1997. The publication's primary objective is to share information gained from recent research findings and experience involving foundations and substructures subjected to freezing and permafrost conditions. Since the traditional approach of embedding foundations or substructures below the historical depth of the frost penetration is not the most cost-effective solution, new design and construction methods are being developed. Three out of the four papers present research concerned with these new methods are being developed. Three out of the four papers present research concerned with these new methods that emphasize modifying one or more of the critical elements needed for the frost action to occur. The fourth paper describes the status of the proposed ASCE standard on frost protected shallow foundations.
