"Inklings: John Wilkins Carter and the Carter's Ink Company is the story of John Carter (1843-1895), a descendant from Thomas Carter, who emigrated from Suffolk, England, in 1635 to the Massachusetts Bay Colony as part of the Great Migration. Thomas was the first minister of the Puritan church in Woburn from 1642. His first-born son, Samuel Carter, also was a minister. Samuel was engaged to help Lancaster recover from the devastating raids and massacre by the Nipmuck Indians during King Philip's War. Successive generations lived in Lancaster before moving to Boston in the 1820s. Timothy Harrington Carter was the first, followed by his brother, Richard Bridge Carter. They established their own families in Boston, which included John Wilkins Carter and his younger brother James Richard Carter.
