Publisher's Synopsis

This is the second study in Michael Williams' "Inequality" series that investigates income inequality in the United States. The coronavirus pandemic of 2020 laid bare inequality issues related to health care as more than 40 million people lost their jobs during the 2020 pandemic and many lost their health care insurance along with their jobs. Several police killings during this time incited riots as the frustration of many rose to the surface. Reminiscent of riots from the 1960s, the United States needs to address inequality or this violence could continue. In this study Michael draws upon his 35 years of professional experience to relate inequality to income taxes, the federal debt and economic growth. In "Inequality and Personal Income Taxes, The Mirage of Progressive Tax Rates in the United States," Michael makes recommendations to improve income inequality by broadening the income tax base, simplifying the U.S. federal tax code, and eliminating preferential income tax treatment while allocating additional funds to health care and education. He draws from the U.S. Constitution to focus his recommendations.
