Publisher's Synopsis
Looks at an analysis of six fairy tales of Europe and Asia which each contain a bird motif as a form of symbolism. Dr von Franz first summarizes the storyline of each tale and then she explores the themes of psychological and spiritual transformation in the varied images of birds, such as the phoenix, the parrot, the griffin and the "simurg" of Persian mysticism.;The fairy tales examined are "The White Parrot" from Spain, "The Bath Badgerd" from Persia, "Prince Hassan Pasha" from Turkestan, "The Bird Flower Triller" from Iran, "The Nightingale Giser" from Balkans and "The Bird Wehmus" from Austria. Special attention is given to the connection between fairy tales and alchemy, which is a symbolic representation of the process of individuation and the guidance that fairy tales give to theraputic work. The book is based on a series of lectures given at the C.G.Jung Institute in Zurich.
