Excerpt from Index of Joint Causes of Death: Showing Assignment to the Preferred Title of the International List of Causes of Death When Two Causes Are Simultaneously Reported
The Manual of the International List of Causes of Death, published by the Bureau of the Census for the use of American registration officials in 'the compilation of mortality statistics, deals with the assignment of single terms, as reported upon certificates of death, to the preper titles of the International List. Very frequently, how ever, medical terms are reported in combination, either as primary and secondary causes or in other relations, and it is necessary to provide for the consistent and uniform disposition of such cases in order that statistics, when compiled in the usually accepted manner on the basis of a single cause for each death, shall be comparable. The Index of Joint Causes is a contribution to this end, and is printed as proof in order to indicate the tentative or provisional character of some of the decisions and to enlist the constructive criticism of workers in this field of practical statistics before the preparation of a more definitive index or method of treatment.
