Mr. Childers was so importunate, and urged me with so much fervour to supervise his work - to point his moral and adorn his tale - that I consented to do so on the distinct understanding that I should be entitled to verify all his facts, modify his sentences, reverse his objectionable judgments, and exclude everything that should in any degree savour of exaggeration. The intelligent reader will thus easily understand the relation that subsists between Jeffry Childers and myself.
