Venice at the start of the sixteenth century was one of Europe's undisputed centres of culture, home to some of the finest artists of the Italian Renaissance, whose importance stretched far beyond the region. The first great painter of the new generation was also the most mysterious: Giorgio da Castelfranco, known as Giorgione (1478-1510). Few works have been attributed to him with any certainty, yet contemporaries, most importantly the young Titian, felt his influence profoundly. In the Age of Giorgione assembles many of the works attributed to Giorgione, along with masterpieces by Titian, Lorenzo Lotto, Sebastiano del Piombo and Giovanni Cariani, among others.
