Publisher's Synopsis

Writing in the mid-15th century, Master Paulus Kal was the agent, confidante and fencing master to the powerful Duke Ludwig IX of Bavaria-Landshut. In his fencing book, prepared for this ducal patron, he presented standard and variant techniques in the tradition of Johannes Liechtenauer, in beautifully rendered and highly detailed illuminations of figures wielding the sword, sword and buckler, dagger, messer (falchion), spear and poleaxe, plus mounted combat.

This beautifully produced full-size facsimile edition includes transcriptions of the German text below each reproduction of the original's folios, to which is added an English language translation.  The book also includes a technical analysis of the material, page-by-page commentary, glossary and bibliography.  The edition is limited to 900 copies, each copy being hand numbered.  It is presented in full-colour, in a large-format volume (380mm high x 320mm wide) with leather and cloth binding, complete with a protective slipcase.
