Publisher's Synopsis
Poetry was Louis de Bernieres' first literary love, and he was surprised when he became a novelist rather than a poet. 'Imagining Alexandria' is the first collection of his poetry to be published. De Bernieres was introduced to Greek poetry by a waiter in Corfu in 1983, and since then he has always travelled with a book of Cavafy's poetry in his pocket. Not surprisingly, his own poetic output was affected by this regular reading, and so here are poems about the distant past, the erotic and the philosophical that owe much to the influence of the great Alexandrian poet.
