Völlig konsterniert erwacht Ian Fielding in nächtlicher Schwärze mit einer schweren Kopfverletzung in der amerikanischen Mojave-Wüste. Ahnungslos, wie er dort hingekommen ist und mit einem totalen Gedächtnisverlust. Mit letzten Kräften schleppt er sich zu einer Straße und begegnet einem Truck, dessen Fahrer ihn aufnimmt. Doch auf der Fahrt zu einem abgelegenen Motel, in dem sich Ian kurzfristig Erholung verspricht. Dort angekommen, wird er von dem Inhaber empfangen, doch der reagiert erschrocken, als würde er Ian kennen. Ian kann nicht wissen, dass er sein Sohn ist, der angeblich vor 14 Jahren ermordet worden sein soll. Ian ist zwar verwundert über die merkwürdige Reaktion des Mannes, aber noch erstaunter, als er beim Bezahlen des Zimmers 3000 Dollar bei sich trägt. Ian ist jedoch zu erschöpft, um sich intensivere Gedanken zu machen und schläft schnell ausgezehrt vor Müdigkeit ein. Am nächsten Tag stellt Ian überrascht fest, dass zwar getrocknetes Blut an seinen Haaren klebt, aber keine Wunde mehr vorhanden ist. Im angrenzenden Restaurant begegnet er einer jungen Frau, die sich Cindy nennt, und die offenbar das gleiche Schicksal teilt wie er. Auch sie ist mitten in der nächtlichen Wüste erwacht und kann sich an die letzten 14 Jahre ihres Lebens nicht erinnern. Gibt es da tatsächlich ein Geheimnis, das Ian und Cindy verbindet? Doch bevor Ian sich eingehender mit Cindy unterhalten kann, trennen sich ihre Wege wieder. Jeder für sich begibt sich fortan auf die Suche der eigenen Vergangenheit. Was sie jedoch nicht ahnen können, ist, dass sie tatsächlich etwas gemeinsam haben, das so unglaublich, fantastisch und nahezu unwirklich erscheint, wie sie es sich in ihren kühnsten Träumen nicht hätten ausmalen können. Denn Ian und auch Cindy bemerken sehr schnell, dass die Erde nicht mehr die ist, die sie vor ihrer Amnesie zurückgelassen haben. Von nun an tut sich eine Welt vor ihnen auf, die sie schier an ihrem Verstand zweifeln lassen. Gleichsam wird Ihnen aber auch immer bewusster, dass sie selber die einzig entscheidenden Figuren in einem globalen Schachspiel sind, denen es möglich sein wird, die Menschheit vor dem Untergang zu bewahren...
