The main focus of this work lies in the various forms of contact between the Germanic tribes from the first century BC through the second century AD. This differs from most research on the Germans, which tend to focus on their relationship to the Roman Empire. Accordingly, in addition to the naturally frequently occurring political and military relationships, inter-family, religious, and trade relations between the Germanic groups are brought to the foreground.
