Rare Book
The first English edition of the libretto of Baldassare Galuppi's highly successful opera which opened in Venice in 1754. This edition marks the first English performance of the opera, 6th January, 1761, the singers and dancers listed under Dramatis Personae (pp. 2-3) including Angiola Calori, Teresa Eberardi and Signor Gherardi 'under the Direction of Signor Gioacchino Cocchi' who had been resident composer at the King's Theatre since 1757. The production was very well received: Burney (History of Music II, 1782) makes much of its popularity, with particular emphasis on the vocal performances of Carlo and Angiola Paganini; and it was performed at Vanburgh's King's Theatre (now, in a different form, Her Majesty's) 20 times between 1760 and 1762, and revived for 16 further performances between 1662 and 1672.
