Publisher's Synopsis
Crafted from the ruins of conflict and the indestructibility of love, 'If' is a powerful love story. Isobel and Edward are musicians who meet and fall in love. But in the heady summer of 1914 their idyll is destroyed when Edward signs up and is sent to fight at Ypres. Within weeks he is taken prisoner and has to endure the harsh conditions of Sedan Officer's Camp. Meanwhile in London Isobel trains as a VAD and begins to work at Camberwell Army Hospital. Edward finally escapes, writing to Isobel as he returns to France in 1915. But the letter goes missing and, heartbroken, she is led to believe that Edward has been killed. In France, Edward, who is still very much alive, understands from a mutual friend that Isobel has met someone else. In response, he throws himself into fighting and at Ypres experiences the horrors of Passchendaele.
