Bakkalaureatsarbeit Presovska Univerzita V Presove: Autorin Andrea F. (Pseudonym dokumente-online.com): The present thesis focuses on the lexicological and translatological aspects of the novel Decline and Fall by Evelyn Waugh from a contrastive view wherethe lexicological issues are mostly based upon the model of contemporary Slovak linguist concerned with English idiomatology Pavol Kvetko. On the other hand, Eugen Nida's concept of formal and dynamic equivalence should represent the theoretical grounding when discussing translatological issues. In the theoretical part we shall turn our attention to the importance of idiomaticity issues in the course of history and we point out a kind of vacuum in the field of linguistics as far as idiomatology is concerned. For the purpose of the present thesis, idioms are understood as traditional types of multi-word expressions being the subject of our interest where the concept of idioms in a broader sense is employed and hence the definition and occurrence of paremiological and specific non-paremiological expressions are discussed. The last sub-chapter of the theoretical part deals with a contrastive view of English and Slovak idioms and translatability aspect is meant to prepare the theoretical background for the core of the practical analysis. Although theoretical constructs and attitudes are dealt with as far as possible the practical examples and evidence from primary texts of fiction are encompassed as well. For our analysis, the novel Decline and Fall by the British author Evelyn Waugh has been chosen. The choice of the novel has not been a coincidence since there is significant evidence that it contains plenty of the desired expressions, i.e. idiomatic expressions. Moreover, Waugh's fiction has been noted for its verbal humour, satire and social criticism often concealed in the language of proverbs, sayings, biblical verses or even allusions unknown to a Slovak reader. Thus we may expect a number of enlightening translations that will be appropriate for our analysis.
