But I am not wishing. To speak of the present. I am going back to about thirty years ago, when I was riding through a quiet, pretty village in the north of England. The road on one side was bounded by a very high wall, which shut out a large wooded park from the street-like village. I felt sad as I looked at the grand, massy groups of forest trees in the park, and just saw the old gray chimneys of the large, gloomy house, rising above the grove that surrounded it. I had no reason for the feeling, that I could define, and I can only imagine it prophetical. Perhaps it was one of those sensations which are now called mesmeric influences!

When I reached the inn, and stopped to bait my horse, I was told that this high wall had been built by the present owner, who, though young.
