In August 2001, my wife and I traveled to the former Soviet Union to adopt two children from an orphanage in Siberia. On arriving, we found a Russian landscape marked by contradiction and impermanence, in which traces of histories realigned and juxtaposed in an unstable geography of memory and ruins.
