Fresh from law school, John Barnes joins his uncle's firm. First assignment: House Avers. The family -- did I say they were eccentric? They are. The family are returning to their house after an absence of some years and John is expected to get things ready for them and to meet whoever arrives.
That's when it all breaks down. Because these people are definitely not from anyplace around here. And then when savage little men break into the library and the butler starts ripping them apart, and the housekeeper appears to be an alien and John learns about the "great ones" in the background -- things unravel. It's up to John Barnes to ravel them back together.
