Midnight, mother, is the hour, and I Have just awakened from a long sweet dream, In which delusion I enjoyed a gleam Of childhood days, that sped too swiftly by. Oh mother, does it ever make thee sigh To think how summary the time did seem? My boyhood was but one short, sunny beam, -- A falling star that flashed along the sky. Then, from thy kindly presence I was hurled Upon the bosom of a selfish world; And many nighls since then have brought no rest; But there is one thing, mother, I retain The principles thou gav'st. They are the same As when I leaned my head upon thy breast. FILLMORE SHOOK'S WEDDING. My wife and I, this wintry day, Drove in the country far away, -- And was it cold? Well, I should say. The cutting gale Would freeze a donkey's mellow bray, And turn him pale. But on we went, nor did we mind The stinging of the frozen wind, For well we knew we soon would find A warm retreat, -- For Sikkink's folks are good and kind, -- They can't be beat. But, oh, how keen the cold wind blew, As o'er the hills and dales we flew; Our cheeks were red, our noses blue, When we arrived; But after greeting friends so true, We soon revived. Yes, there stood Fill in all his pride, With faithful Hannah by his side, -- A beautiful and blushing bride, So young and fair, And naught, save death, could e'er divide The happy pair. When all the solemn
