This volume establishes the work of Ralph Hotere, New Zealand's foremost living abstract painter who, for 30 years, has incorporated poems and other texts into many of his works. It uses poetry by Bill Manhire, Hone Tuwhare, Ian Wedde and Cilla McQueen as a central thread in his development as a painter. It examines the collaborative process, and presents the poems themselves, the artist's drawings and watercolours using words, and the large-scale canvases and panels for which Hotere is renowned.;Ralph Hotere (Aupouri) was born in Mitimiti in Northland in 1932. Since 1969, he has lived in the Dunedin area and is currently based at Port Chalmers. His work is held in public and private collections throughout New Zealand.;Published to coincide with a major exhibition at Wellington's City Gallery, curated by the author, Gregory O'Brien, the book also features the artist's work using traditional Maori poems, and looks at his problematic relationship with Maori culture.;Gregory O'Brien is the author of "Lands and Deeds: Profiles of Contemporary New Zealand Painters" and co-editor (with Jennny Bornholdt and Mark Williams) of "An Anthology of New Zealand Poetry".
