Somerset, 1832. Newborn baby Hope, living proof of Lady Harvey's adultery, is smuggled away from Briargate House by Nell, the parlourmaid, and adopted into her own family. As Hope's new eldest sister, Nell keeps the child's identity secret at Briargate House. Hope is also taken into service there, but a series of events occur which force her to flee to the streets of Bristol to lead a vagabond's existence. Now, compelled to abandon her family and in the midst of an outbreak of cholera, Hope proves herself an able nurse, a vocation which will take her to the battlefields of the Crimea. But the secrets of Hope's past are not yet done with her - and she must return to England to face the legacy of her birth
