Publisher's Synopsis

Based on recent innovative research Homeless Single Men makes a timely and thought provoking contribution to the policy debate about homelessness that challenges conventional wisdom. Policy for a decade or more has sought to close down large hostels and to 'resettle' inhabitants, sometimes by stages, into normal housing. The book examines the unexpected and the perverse consequences of implementing this policy, to conclude that this approach can often be inappropriate. Because resettlement carries risks of isolation, boredom, lack of occupation and poverty, policies that focus predominantly on housing solutions are doomed to failure. Moreover and most controversially, there must remain a role for direct access accommodation to meet the needs of both newly homeless people and those who have chosen the road as a way of life.
