This book is a compilation of the wartime letters of Sergeant Pilot A.J. "Bob" Kimberley, written to his mother. They give an insight into his life as he tries to win his wings and fight for his country. Bob Kimberley at the age of 21 volunteered for the RAF in May 1941. From this book we receive first-hand accounts of his life, from his training, to his return home for his wedding. His letters give a nostalgic look into times of hardship due to the war. Throughout, the pervading theme is one of barely-disguised loneliness, showing a deep longing for a return to normality of a family life. Bob Kimberley flew Beaufighter fighter bombers. In one such plane on 10th September, 1944, his squadron was attacked off the coast of Holland. He never returned.
