Feeling that the unrecorded history of one's native town, like the unmarked graves of parents, evidences both the want of a proper respect and a filial gratitude, we commenced the following chapters, more from a sense of duty than from mo tives less worthy of regard. To this sense of duty was soon added the virtue of necessity, which so often causes a per son to hazard that before the public eye which no motives otherwise could have induced, and no ambition could have prompted.
