The Virginia 24th Cavalry Battalion Partisan Rangers was organized with three cavalry companies and one artillery company by September 12, 1862. Artillery company disbanded in June 1863 per orders of June 5, 1863, from the Adjutant and Inspector General's Office. The unit was disbanded as rowdy and useless per S.O. #3, Adjutant and Inspector General's Office, dated January 5, 1863.
