The Illinois 60th Infantry Regiment was organized at Camp Dubois, Anna. Ill., Feb. 17, 1862. Beginning with the Siege of Corinth the regiment participated in many of the battles in central Tennessee. They were transferred to the Chattanooga area in time to participate in the battles there and pursuit of Longstreet's army to Knoxville. They participated in the Atlanta Campaign, the March to the Sea and the Carolinas Campaign, ending the war in North Carolina. The 60th Illinois participated in the grand review at Washington and then proceeded to Louisville, Ky., where it performed duty as provost guard at the headquarters of the 14th army corps until July 31, 1865, when it was mustered out. The Regiment lost during service 2 Officers and 44 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 4 Officers and 225 Enlisted men by disease. Total 275.
