Publisher's Synopsis
This work defines and describes proposed histological groups for 15 common cancers and gives the appropriate "International Classification of Diseases for Oncology" (ICD-O) morphology codes. Noting that the characteristics of certain cancers are better defined by a combination of tumour site and morphology, the report responds to the lack of a generally agreed scheme for subdividing cancers at a particular site into histological groups for use in clinical and epidemiological studies. With this need in mind, the report presents groupings of morphology codes for selected cancers in order to facilitate analysis of cancer registry by histological type and to enable comparisons between datasets from different registries.;The proposed histological groups, descriptions and codes, which are based on the "International Histological Classification of Tumours", are accompanied by computer software that allows the creation of these subgroups from case listings in cancer registries. Included with the report, the WCONVERT package features programs for conversion from various ICD systems into ICD-O-2, then from the ICD-O-2 codes to other coding systems. The software also includes the IARC CHECK routine for checking ICD-O-2 topography and histology combinations. Complete instructions for installing and running the programme are provided in the report.
