Des histoires de la litt�rature grecque et de la romaine, l'europe savante en poss�de plusieurs, qui se recommandent � diff�rents titres; ce sont des livres �crits avec chaleur et talent comme l'ouvrage malheureusement inachev� d'ottfried M�ller; ce sont des manuels excellents et riches de faits, comme ceux de Bernhardy, de Baehr et de Teuffel; mais existe-t-il, en Angleterre, en France ou en Allemagne, un seul ouvrage qui retrace, avec un d�tail suffisant, toute l'histoire de l'art antique, qui le suive, dans ses progr�s et ses transformations, depuis les origines jusqu'� la d�cadence finale, jus qu'au temps o� le christianisme et l'invasion des barbares ach�vent de dissoudre le monde ancien et pr�parent la naissance du monde moderne, d'une soci�t� nouvelle et d'un art nouveau?
