Publisher's Synopsis
Higher Power: God As We Understood Him
What if the thing you've been running from your whole life is the only thing that can save you?
Higher Power: God As We Understood Him isn't your typical recovery book. It doesn't preach. It doesn't sugarcoat. It doesn't try to make you believe anything. It's a conversation-about addiction, powerlessness, and the terrifying, beautiful idea that maybe you don't have to do it all alone.
This isn't just about drugs or alcohol.
It's about addiction in all forms: food, sex, gambling, technology, control, image, distraction.
It's about the ways we try to fix ourselves-and the invitation to finally stop.
Inside, you'll explore:
Why self reliance fails-and what might actually work
How religion, mysticism, science, and soul all point to the same deeper need
Personal Stories from different views, who lost everything... and finally found something worth keeping
Honest reflections on God-from anger, rejection, and doubt to awakening
Practices that ground you in spiritual connection without performance or perfection
What "God as we understood Him" means in a world of the 12 Step Recovery community.
You don't have to be religious.
You don't even have to be sure you believe in God.
You just have to be willing to question the lie that says you're supposed to do this alone.
This book isn't here to fix you.
It's here to sit with you-until something real starts to rise.
If you've ever whispered, "There has to be more than this,"
If you're sober, struggling, spiritually burned out, or just tired of holding it all together...
This book is for you.
About the Author
Patrick P. has been sober since 1994. He is an interventionist, a licensed private investigator, a pastor, equine therapy horse trainer, and a certified drug and alcohol counselor. He holds degrees in psychology, criminology, and law-but more importantly, he's a relentless advocate for real recovery.
With decades of experience in crisis intervention, addiction treatment, and behavioral health, Patrick has seen how a lack of a Higher Power makes recovery nearly impossible for the real addict. He doesn't just talk about recovery; he lives it, fights for it, and builds solutions outside the machine.
Through Bunkhouse Heroes, Bunkhouse Behavioral Health, and the Bunkhouse Recovery Ranch, Patrick is creating a faith-rooted recovery community built on one simple, ancient principle: one addict helping another. No spiritual performance. No polished facades. Just honest connection, hard truths, and the grace that comes when people show up for each other with nothing left to prove.
His work blends faith, grit, and deep compassion for the brokenhearted. And his mission is clear:
To help the ones who can't help themselves-until they can.
