Mei-hua's world is turned upside-down when her father is accused of disloyalty to the new Ming Dynasty Emperor. If he's found guilty, he and his entire family will be executed. To protect Mei-hua, his only daughter, he sends her away disguised as a mute peasant. Before reaching safety, however, she is kidnapped and sold to a wealthy family.
