Publisher's Synopsis

""Herodias"" is a historical novel written by Gustave Flaubert, first published in 1877. The story is set in the time of John the Baptist and tells the tale of the conflict between Herod Antipas and John the Baptist, as well as the love triangle between Herod, his wife Herodias, and her daughter Salome. The novel is based on the biblical story of John the Baptist's beheading, but Flaubert adds his own interpretation and fictional elements to the story. The novel is known for its vivid descriptions of the characters and settings, as well as its exploration of themes such as power, desire, and morality. ""Herodias"" is considered one of Flaubert's most accomplished works and a masterpiece of French literature. In the eastern side of the Dead Sea rose the citadel of Machaerus. It was built upon a conical peak of basalt, and was surrounded by four deep valleys, one on each side, another in front, and the fourth in the rear. At the base of the citadel, crowding against one another, a group of houses stood within the circle of a wall, whose outlines undulated with the unevenness of the soil. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
