The elephant is a large mammal that can be found in parts of Africa, Southeast and South Asia. There is are 3 species of elephant - the Asian elephant, the African bush elephant and the African forest elephant. The African bush elephant is the largest, weighing in at approximately 13,000 lbs, followed closely by the Asian elephant. The African forest is the smallest at approximately 6,000 lbs. The wild populations of elephants are declining rapidly due to habitat loss and human predation of the animal for its ivory tusks. Elephants are very intelligent and have excellent memories. They live in tight matriarchal herds led by the largest female of the group. Male elephants leave the herd after 10-12 years of age and live the rest of their lives alone or with other males. The elephant diet consists of plant materials and cultivated crops of sugarcane and bananas. An adult will consume 300-400 lbs of food per day. Elephants mate during the rainy season and the female gives birth to one calf after 22 months. Newborn babies weigh 200-250 lbs and have no muscle tone in their trunks. It takes several months for a baby to gain control of its trunk.
