A sudden accidental death throws Harley, a prominent lawyer, among other damned souls into Hell's passageway. Following an unexplained escape, he awakens in space and travels in search of his wife, Helen, whom, he presumes, has ended up in Heaven. His appearance there shocks the angelic population, who see portents of doom in his very existence. In keeping with his former career of advocate for the guilty, he takes on the monumental quest of storming the gates of Hell to free the imprisoned. His success or failure may have drastic consequences that threaten the security and stability of the created universe.
