Publisher's Synopsis
In 1992, the Government published its health strategy for England, "The Health of the Nation". This document recognized that every part of government has a legitimate role in supporting actions that promote health.;This book is based on a series of presentations at a conference held at the Royal Society of Medicine in February 1994. It sought to examine how government departments other than Health had responded to the challenges in "The Health of the Nation". Commencing with a series of presentations from some of the major sectoral departments, representatives from industry and other interests, the consequences for health of recent legislation, programmes and schemes are examined. The departments of Education, Environment, Trade and Industry, Transport, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, the Home Office and the Scottish Office are among those represented.;The book provides many examples of how government can contribute to health, working in partnership with other agencies, such as industry and with the voluntary sector. The book aims to bring these initiatives to a wider audience, and encourage others to think creatively about how they can contribute to promoting the health of the nation.
