Publisher's Synopsis

Epilepsy is a neurological disease that affects the brain. It can cause seizures, and episodes of uncontrolled electrical activity in the brain. Epilepsy affects people of all ages, races, and genders. It can be a serious condition but can also be treated with medication and surgery.

Anyone can have a seizure, but epilepsy is more common in adults. It affects about 1 in 30 adults in the United States. About 1 in 500 children between the ages of 6 and 17 has epilepsy.

A problem with the electrical activity in the brain causes epilepsy. There are two main types of epilepsy: generalized and partial. Generalized epilepsy is the most common type and affects all parts of the brain. Partial epilepsy is less common and affects only one part of the brain.

People with epilepsy usually have several seizures a day. Seizures can vary in severity, but they always cause neurological damage. In most cases, epilepsy can be controlled with medication and/or surgery.
