A virgin when, at seventeen, she became the second wife of a man several years older than her father, she was now divorced, leaving their children with him. They were his only children and, in his way, he loved them; he would see they were raised properly. But she, it could be, and was, said had never recovered from her postpartum depression - which had simply grown, and become worse, with each successive pregnancy. Yet, it seemed worth it. Each pregnancy meant a birth, and each birth meant an orgasm - to be followed by the oxytocin, or 'love hormone', high during the year or so of breastfeeding. She needed that feeling, that sense of trust and love which had never been part of her early life.
