When Belafonte was eight years old, his mother sent him and his brother to live with their grandmother in Jamaica.Belafonte's grandmother was a strict disciplinarian who instilled in him a strong sense of discipline and work ethic. She also introduced him to the world of music. Belafonte's grandmother had a Victrola, and she would play recordings of famous jazz musicians, such as Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington, for him.
