Publisher's Synopsis
""Hard Life in the Colonies and Other Experiences By Sea and Land"" is a memoir written by C. Carolyn Jenkyns. The book chronicles her life experiences as a colonist in various parts of the world, including South Africa, India, and Australia. Jenkyns recounts the challenges and hardships she faced as a woman in these colonies, including dealing with illness, poverty, and social isolation. She also describes her travels by sea, including a journey on a convict ship, and her encounters with various cultures and peoples. Through her vivid storytelling, Jenkyns provides a unique perspective on colonial life in the 19th century.1891. Illustrated. Now First Printed. Compiled from Private Letters. From the Preface: The following pages are offered to the public in the belief that the Colonial experiences they record are of sufficient interest to justify their transcription from a series of private letters written twenty years ago. It is not claimed for the book that the adventures it contains are specially remarkable, or that many men now living are not more competent to speak of the ups and downs of colonial life than the three writers of these letters: it is rather as presenting a picture of the life of young Englishmen who have knocked about a little before settling down-a picture the interest of which, perhaps, lies in its being fairly typical of many thousands of cases-that these sketches have been put into print. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
