When two men first met, they both were just twenty-five years of age and much too young to be penniless drunkards. However, at the time, that was what they were. Therefore, the idea that those two men, traveling and working together, could, through their own perseverance, deprivation, and determination as well as adversity and, yes, even a little chicanery, possibly rise from penniless street people to millionaires during a depression was unthinkable. Nevertheless, that is exactly what they did.
