Publisher's Synopsis
This is a book about an adventure by a suicidal American journalist and a French inspector tasked with paying a ransom in Syria for the release of a French hostage. The story, part fiction part fact, is told by Kamal Abdallah, who is writing it from his cell in a Syrian prison. Haj Kamal hopes that its publication will expedite his release. However, the Cairo publisher is not answering his queries. The book makes known the 'Notebook from Prison' written by the late Bertrand Berenger, suggesting that the French professor's argument about the origins of Islam might have been behind his kidnapping. Told that his book is unlikely to find an audience in the Arab-speaking world, Haj Kamal has it translated into English.
