Publisher's Synopsis
There is a recognition of the usefulness of the hair follicle as a model system for fundamental research into aspects of cell biology, differentiating systems and/or as a hormone target organ with paradoxically different responses depending on the body site. This is paralleled by the discovery that hair growth can by stimulated in previously bald scalp in some individuals. Since hair loss, either caused by alopecia areata or male pattern baldness, is both common and distressing to the person concerned, there is obviously a major market for any successful treatment. This volume covers aspects of hair research and provides an understanding for research in the future which will lead to the development of better treatments for hair disorders.
