Publisher's Synopsis

* A must for all serious biomedical research libraries * The premier meeting for setting terminology and standardization in this area, based on a unique, collaborative experimental programme * Authoritative editors and a distinguished international cast of contributors This volume provides a comprehensive account of the HLA system, and draws together contributions from specialists in an extraordinarily wide range of biological, biomedical, and clinical specialities. The 1991 International Histocompatibility Workshop and Conference took place in Japan. The main business of the meeting is to consider the results from an enormous four year international collaborative testing programme, which used 537 selected sera and 32000 panel cells from 180 ethnic groups. From this programme, known HLA specificities are further analysed, subdivided, and their categorization refined and agreed. New HLA types are also identified. For the first time, the meeting used oligonucleotide probes and amplification techniques to provide an analysis of the system at the DNA level. All these results are reported in Part 1 and are not easily available elsewhere.;Part 2 comprises the 199 conference papers, plenary lectures and special and mini-symposia. Many of the key areas are reviewed by leading authorities in immunogenetics, DNA analysis of the system, transplantation, disease susceptibility, immune regulation, T-cell biology, population genetics and evolution.
