Publisher's Synopsis

This book summarizes the life and family of Henry Hewitt (1814-1897) who was born in Paythorne, Yorkshire, England, and emigrated to Wisconsin in the United States of America in 1842. Hewitt settled in Menasha, Wisconsin, after beginning his career as a construction manager building locks, dams, and canals along the Fox River from Kaukauna to Menasha. He also built plank roads and the Manitowoc-Mississippi Railroad. He was an investor in the Fox and Wisconsin River Improvement Company. Hewitt acquired large tracts of land and timber and established or invested in a wide variety of businesses and manufacturing concerns including three banks in Neenah, Menasha, and Kaukauna. Stories are included about several other pioneer personalities from the Fox Cities who were assisted in some way by Hewitt. Some members of the Hewitt family moved from Wisconsin to the Pacific Northwest and settled in the Everett and Tacoma, Washington area.
