Porter in the Summer of 1904 with the intention of having a brief history of his life and work for his family and grandchildren. It was not his idea that it should be printed.

Mr. Porter's life work was so interwoven with the development of Chicago and the near North west, and this narrative gives such an interesting and clear idea of the conditions existing and of the marvelous growth of this country during his lifetime, that it has been decided to print the autobiography in a small edition for his close friends and associates.
